Barre-Victoria Lilies

Please click on Barre-Victoria Lilies to view a Victoria Longwood Hybrid grown by Dr. Barre Hellquist at his home in North Adams, Ma. Growing Victorias is very dificult in this USDA climate zone 5. Typically plants do not flower and leaves only get to about 12 inches in diameter and only one at a time. The extra heat provided by the Thermoplanter allows the Victoria to not cold-shock during the cool nights and cool rainy days we get here even in July. This allows the Victoria to thrive despite the cooler water we experience in this part of Massachussets. If you look closely in photos # 3, 5 and 8, you will see some small Victoria leaves in the back of the main plant. This plant is in a 10 gallon tub but not a Thermoplanter. The leaves on this plant never got more than 12 inches, never had more than 2 leaves and did not flower, this despite being in a much larger growing container. The Thermoplanter is only 2.75 gallons - very small for growing a Victoria.
